History of the Nevada Media
Directory™ Nevada Media Directory™ is 23
years old. The directory was first developed in 1985 by Publisher John
Paul Owles while he was working on his Masters Degree at the University
of Nevada, Reno's Donald W. Reynold's School of Journalism. What started
out as an exercise in computer software developed into a statewide
directory of the Nevada news media. The directory premiered in 1986 in
the form of a binder with updated printed editions.
"I was trying to learn database management on a Commodore 64 and
volunteered to update a media list for the Reno Rodeo and MS Society as
part of a Special Projects class in Public Relations," recalls John
Paul. "I really did not know of what use the information could have.
After a short stint doing communication's consulting at a national
computer company, I decided to try and produce the directory using an
IBM PC. When Apple's Mac and laser printers came out, the directory in
its current format came out."
"In 1999, we began offering the directory online as a completely
searchable database."
